Linux Foundationは、InterUSSプラットフォームオープンソースプロジェクトを新たにホストすることを発表した。これは、安全、公平で効率的なドローン運用を推進するUASサービスサプライヤー（USS）が高信頼、安全、スケーラブルな相互運用を実現するためのものとしている。
開始時点でのコントリビューターとして、業界と規制当局からWing、AirMap、Uber、Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation（FOCA）が参加する。
地上の交通における進化と同様に、空も交通量が増えつつある。世界中の航空規制当局は、安全を確保する取り組みの一環として、UAS Traffic Management（UTM/U-Space）の実装を進めている。
UTMでは、ドローン運用者が安全で規制を遵守した運用を実施できるように、一連のUSS（U-Space Service Providers/USP）がサポートを行う。USSは、重なり合う空域でサービスを提供すること、および飛行計画の戦略的な競合回避やリモート識別などのサービスを支えるためのデータを必要に応じて共有することができ、ASTM Internationalなどの組織を通じてデータ共有するために、業界として標準を開発している。
InterUSSプロジェクトでは、標準に準拠したオープンソースの実装に関するコラボレーションおよび開発のためのフォーラムを設置して、UTM/U-Space環境におけるコミュニケーションを促進する。
InterUSSプラットフォームでは、USS同士のコミュニケーションが促進されることで、さまざまなUTM/U-Spaceサービスがサポートされ、ASTM Remote ID標準で定義されているDiscovery and Synchronization Service（DSS）が実装される。これには以下の2つの役割がある。
- USSが空域内の飛行や制限について情報を取得するために、他のUSSを見つけられるようになる
- そのような飛行および制限を把握していることを、証明するようにUSSに求めるメカニズムが提供される
InterUSSプラットフォームでは、個人を特定可能な情報を一切要求することなくこれらの機能が達成されており、USSは必要なときにのみデータを共有する。
InterUSSプラットフォームは、業界が規制当局および標準化団体と調整を進めながら開発した。このプラットフォームはNASAのUTMテクノロジー機能レベルのデモとFAA（アメリカ連邦航空局）のUTMパイロットプログラムで相互運用を行うフレームワークにもなる。
Linux Foundationの戦略プログラム担当バイスプレジデントのMike Dolan氏は、次のようにコメントしている。
ドローンおよびドローンとの相互運用は、テクノロジー業界全体の中でも最も重要なイノベーション領域です。世界中のドローン運用を前進させるためにInterUSSプラットフォームと開発者のグローバルなコミュニティをサポートしていくことを楽しみにしています。
同プロジェクトは、ドローン分野のさまざまな技術関係者から構成されるTechnical Advisory Council（TAC）などを含む、オープン管理モデルを採用している。プロジェクトの範囲は、TACによるレビューと管理のプロセスによって決定される。
